Snapchat, renowned as the ephemeral image and video messaging app, has unveiled its new camera sunglasses. This is the first hardware project of the Los Angeles-based company, which is recently rebranded as Snap Inc.
The new camera-equipped sunglasses are named “Spectacles”. They can be used to record 10 seconds of video with a tap. It records the stuff in circular format, and is then wirelessly uploaded to the ‘Memories’ section of the Snapchat app via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.
According to the Snap Inc. website ,“Spectacles are sunglasses with an integrated video camera that makes it easy to create Memories. We’ve created one of the smallest wireless video cameras in the world, capable of taking a day’s worth of Snaps on a single charge, and we integrated it seamlessly into a fun pair of sunglasses – available in 3 different colors! Spectacles connect directly to Snapchat via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and transfer your Memories directly into the app in our brand new circular video format. Circular video plays full screen on any device, in any orientation, and captures the human perspective with a 115 degree field of view.”
The recording mode will be activated by tapping the top left-hand corner of the glasses. It allows the user to take 10 second-long video. A second tapping of the button will allow the user to record 30 seconds of continuous video. When the glasses are in the recording mode, a light will turn on. This is presumably to avoid any unwarranted probability of it being labelled as a privacy nightmare.
The company behind the youth-centric photo and video social network Snapchat has changed its name to Snap Inc. In the words of Evan Spiegel, the 26-year-old founder of Snapchat , “Now that we are developing other products, like Spectacles, we need a name that goes beyond just one product – but doesn’t lose the familiarity and fun of our team and brand. We decided to drop the “chat” and go with Snap Inc!”
The Spectacles are expected to be available in the U.S. in the autumn on a limited basis at a price of $130.
How about creating a short video with the help of a spectacle? This is in fact becoming a reality with Snapchat introducing camera equipped spectacles.
